cruises say there are no confirmed cases on that ship. but they are recommending that passengers self-quarantine. >> reporter: this state lab is really one of the most advanced viral laboratories on the fapeo and it has had issues with so t arrive will have a huge impact the ship and the crew of the ship. but also on the level of angst many americans are feeling about the uncontrolled spread of this virus. >> reporter: the federal state and local governments must know the exact condition of the 3,483 passengers and crew. >> of that, a total of 35 had shown flu-like symptoms during the course of this 15-day

cruise. many of those people have recovered and are no longer showing flu-like symptoms. >> reporter: anyone on the ship who showed those symptoms and others are being tested today. this military helicopter flew out to deliver the test kits to the ship midmorning. administering the test will take several hours to complete. the test will then be analyzed by the california viral disease laboratory in richmond. one of the most advanced disease labs in the world. >> we anticipate results early tomorrow. >> reporter: then comes the thorny issue of docking the ship. >> once we have results, the cdc and the state will determine the most appropriate location for the ship to berth. and that will be -- needs to provide for the safety of the surrounding community as well as the passengers and crew. >> reporter: the grand princess may or may not dock in the bay.

>> the cdc and the state are considering a number of locations, including san francisco. where it ends up has a lot to do with the resources that will be available to serve the passengers and the crew. >> once we know, then a decision will be made. and as soon as we know what that decision is, then we will provide that information to the public. >> reporter: which will also be crucial for the entire $45 billion cruise industry, which has been hammered by lost stock price, voyages and customers. we are awaiting the arrival of the samples. we don't know if they'll come by the road or the helicopter

helicopters. >> if they have to be quarantined, could that quarantine happen while the ship remains offshore? or would that happen while it's dock there, potentially in san francisco? >> it could happen at one of a number of places. it would be bad to do it out to sea because some people will get seasick. on top of that, if it becomes a pettrey dish, you don't want to have that confined space. most likely there might be a quarantine that would take place. very likely dockside, or they might transport those people to travis air force force or some other quarantine sites. that's why these tests are so crucial. san francisco announced that city's first official

confirmed case today. the hospital has set up containment tents in its emergency department to train staff and gear up for a potential increase in cases. health officials say the two patients are not related and are being treated at two different hospitals in san francisco. >> we do not know how they were exposed to the virus. we expected that to happen, we anticipated that. >> officials say the families of to the patients are being closely monitored for symptoms. san francisco is now able to test potential cases here locally. one coronavirus patient is the parent of a student at lowell high school in sfrab. and for that reason, the decide

has decided to close indefinitely. >> live from school district headquarters. officials spoke about the closure a short time ago. >> reporter: officials confirmed for us this afternoon that the student at lowell high school is the child of one of those two confirmed cases of coronavirus here in san francisco. that student not showing any symptoms of coronavirus. but has been sent home along with all 3,000 students. all weekend events associated with the school will be canceled. it does not appear that the student has any siblings at any other schools in this district. so far the district is saying they're not seeing a spike in the number of students complaining of flu-like illness but say closing the school was the prudent thing to do at this time. >> at this time, this wasn't

their recommendation. but we're taking the -- our families, their concerns into account. and we know this is a conservative decision. but we did it out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our students. >> reporter: the school district is hoping to have an update as early as tomorrow about whether school will resume on monday. in the meantime, the district says it will be giving lowell a thorough cleaning. also apparently working on a remote learning plan just in case students are kept away from their schools. that student does not appear to be showing any symptoms that they may have contracted covid- 19 there. no confirmation that that student has covid-19. they are, we have learned,

currently under quarantine at their home in san francisco. >> thank you for the update. now we go to santa clara county. and health officials there announce there are six new cases of coronavirus. and that brings the total number of cases in that county to 20. the county is advising residents to avoid gatherings with others and limit work travel. speaking out today after a new survey reveals many nurses don't believe hospitals are prepared to handle the coronavirus. the nation's largest union is asking hospitals to step up protocols and procedure procedures. they also highlighted additional drawbacks of healthcare workers being exposed and then having to be quarantined. >> we are not only prevented

from caring for our covid-19 patients but also taken away from caring for our cancer patients, our cardiac patients, our premature babies. >> yesterday the union petitioned osha to adopt an emergency temporary standard to protect healthcare workers, patients and the public. the nurses say they're confident the coronavirus can be contained if employers and the government provide them with the right staffing, equipment, and supplies. >> it's >> it's not just here in the bay area. across the country and the world, health officials are stepping up their containment efforts. uncertainty over the outbreak sparked more worries today on wall street. more from atlanta. >> reporter: the deadly coronavirus outbreak continues to spread across the country and around the world. more than 95,000 cases confirmed. the number of new infections in china has dropped significantly. here in the u.s., there are more than 150 confirmed cases.

most of the deaths have occurred at a seattle area nursing home now under investigation by the cdc. despite the spread, the trump administration says its containment protocols are working. though the risk of infection is rising in some states. >> the risk in the united states as a whole is still low. the risk of getting infected when you have community spread in a certain area is a bit higher. >> reporter: across the country, pharmacies are reporting shortages of face masks, wipes and sanitizers. leading to fears of hoarding ahead of what could become a nationwide epidemic. >> some people are mildly concerned. there are some people who are a bit more stressed that are wildly afraid of the world coming to an end. >> reporter: while public health officials are urging caution, some are saying there's no need to stop travelling. the airline industry says it stands to lose up to $113 billion due to people canceling

travel plans. and those still flying are taking precautions. >> washing your hands a lot. trying to stay away from people that sneeze. >> what's not to be concerned about? >> reporter: officials in israel say they're working on a coronavirus vaccine that could be in about four months. fear about the outbreak sent the markets down again. vice president mike pence met today in minnesota with the ceo of 3m, which makes protective masks. those are in high demand across the country ever since the coronavirus outbreak. 3m has upped its production of masks and respirators to meet the demand. the vice president talked with

crowded democratic field has narrowed once again with elizabeth warren dropping out of the race. >> she made that announcement from her home earlier this morning. and the big question, will she endorse somebody? greg lee joining us with more. >> you bet. the decision right is now no. at least for now. senator warren says she needs to take a breath and think about what to do. no doubt her endorsement is much sought-after, and she's already spoken to joe biden and bernie sanders. in a call with her staff she said our work continues, the fight goes on, and big dreams never die. >> i will not be running for president in 2020. but i guarantee i will stay in the fight. for the hardworking folks across this country.

>> reporter: learnt elizabeth warren is suspending her campaign for president after breaking the news to her staff, want she told reporters in an at times emotional news conference. >> a progressive wing that bernie sanders is the incumbent for, and a moderate wing that joe biden is the incumbent for. and there's no room for anyone nels this. i thought that wasn't right. but evidently, i was wrong. >> reporter: once considered a frontrunner, warren failed to gain any traction on super tuesday, even coming in third in her home state of massachusetts. when asked about potential endorsement, she said this. >> let's take a deep breath and spend a little time on that. we don't have to decide right this minute. >> reporter: other democratic candidates reacted to her decision on twitter, calling her a fighter and thanking her for running.

>> everyone says whiner. and if you say no, about a bazillion women think what planet do you live on. >> reporter: melinda jackson believes the country is ready for a woman president. just maybe not this year. she said warren's performance, hillary clinton's run in 2016, and others like harris and klobuchar this year set the stage. >> gender is always a factor with women candidates. but the more we see women running for different levels of office, the more familiar it becomes. and the less focused they'll be on just the fact that it's a woman. >> with this race down to two viable candidates like you see on your screen, a contested convention becomes less likely because it is possible now for biden or sanders to hit the majority of delegates with the remaining primary.

1,991 delegates to have that majority needed for the nomination. >> let's talk about elizabeth warren, leading the race here. she's a progressive, bernie sanders is a progressive. logic would tell you that a lot of those supporters might move over to bernie sanders but that may not be a given. >> sure. and i think bernie may see a bump because of this. when you look at some of the polls, maybe only 60% go to bernie sanders. our biggest right, now isn't necessarily who matches up with my ideology but someone who they think has the best chance of competing with president trump. >> let's talk about who elizabeth warren endorses. there's one thing about who her supporters move to. do you think see may just sit this one out?

>> that's the question. is she gonna come out with an endorsement? she was quick to say several times today i'm not ready to do that. and i think biden and sanders have already called her, likely having conversations about how can we instill some of your ideology into our campaign in order to get to you come to our side? no doubt this that is a much sought-after decision. i could potentially see her waiting until there is a nominee. it is clear she will have a place in whatever administration moving forward. >> the key test for the remaining candidates in the race, it's going to be coming next tuesday when we have a whole lot more states who will be casting their ballots. i think key among them is michigan. does bernie sanders have to win michigan to have a path moving forward? >> when we're talking about momentum, that is a big one. and the governor just endorsed joe biden and that is a big play in that state.

a swing state with a lot of delegates that could potentially play a role. and to give you a sewns of how important that state is, bernie sanders canceled a really in mississippi. and now he's going to michigan to talk to voters there. that is a huge one on the calendar for both men. >> we're already seeing some shifts in strategies leading up to to next tuesday because of last today. >> and more indication, and the lawmakers locally, said we want california on super tuesday. they got exactly what they wanted. look at how many candidates. seven candidates five days onning to just really three. that is a huge drop because of the number of delegates that were up for grabs on super tuesday. >> and chelsea gabbert? >> still in it. >> anybody know why? >> your guess is as good as mine but we'll see. >> absolutely. the bay area weather pattern changing around quite a bit. yesterday we had the record temperatures well up boost

average. today a bit of a a cool-down. here is our live camera. looking toward some scattered low clouds out there in the distance. average high for today is the low to mid-60s. and temperatures actually cooling off a bit of a. so far the high today in santa rosa, only 70 degrees. san francisco downtown, 61. and oakland airplane, concord and san jose all around 66. a sharp drop-off in numbers for today. we are closer to the average. here's the satellite. and for the past month or so, we have been pointing at storms in the pacific and saying the snrg going way up to our north. finally a change here. a system here, and this will finally, of course, northern california and the bay area by friday night and into saturday morning. right now we still are tracking the scattered low clouds in the coast and around portions of the bay. and we'll check in on some of the current numbers out there. still some 60s toward concord

five-day. all coming up in just a few minutes. two former oakland police chiefs are calling for the firing of the police department's federal oversight monitor. recently ousted chief kirkpatrick and former chief jordan accused the federal monitor, robert war shaw, of adding new reforms as the department is about to meet its goals. a legal settlement in 2003 called for the department to complete 50 reforms under the guidance of warshaw. and after 17 year, they're still not done. he has repeatedly declined request for comments about the reforms. kirkpatrick who was fired without cause announced today she plans to sue the police department over her termination. >> i did weigh my legal options. i am not one who thinks that you settle everything through legal routes. but i will tell you that today

the top democratic in the senate is trying to clarify. fox news said that chuck schumer was clearly threatening them. >> there is nothing to call this except a threat. >> reporter: mitch mcconnell slamming chuck schumer for saying supreme court justices would, quote, "pay the price for antiabortion rulings." >> the leader of the united states senate threatened two associate justices of the u.s. supreme court, period. there's no other way to interpret that. >> reporter: outside the supreme court on wednesday, shumer said "as justices considered a case about

limiting abortion in louisiana." >> i want to tell you, gorsuch, i want to tell you, cavanaugh, you have released the whirlwind. and you will pay the price. >> reporter: chief justice john roberts rubuicking him in a statement saying, quote, "justices know that criticism comes with the territory. but threatening statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only appropriate, they are dangerous." senator shumer walking his comments back on thursday, claiming the remarks didn't come out the way he intended because he was angry over abortion rights. >> i'm from brooklyn. we speak in strong language. i shouldn't have used the words i did. but in no way was i making a threat. >> reporter: president trump weighing in as well writing quote shumer has brought great danger." in a statement the american bar association said it was deeply troubled by shumer's comments.

san francisco's district attorney are outraged over an i.c.e. arrest of a man on tuesday. i.c.e. agents took him into custody. the i.c.e. arrest in or near courthouses deters people from accessing the justice system, they said, and makes us all less safe. i.c.e. has not commented on the arrest. in the past, they have said that the agency has federal authority to make arrests as it cease fit, no matter the location. in san jose, the children's discovery museum has closed and will reopen tuesday of next week because of coronavirus concerns. officials from the museum tell us an employee may have been exposed to the virus and has been tested. they're awaiting those results which should come in the next couple of days. on the peninsula, a private school is closed for the rest of this week after an employee may have been exposed to the

virus. azenith smith has that story. >> such a shocking thing all together that i never really thought of things, like, oh, i could number contact with that person. >> reporter: for maya stern, it hasn't quite sunk in. the school is closed for several days amid-coronavirus concerns. the high school senior showed us the alert she received tuesday night. >> it's crazy to think that it's extended this far in such a short span of time. like, to my own school. >> reporter: officials say they first learned a staff member had contact with a relative who tested positive for coronavirus on tuesday. that employee has gone in for testing and is awading results. awaiting results. >> we are confident that the employee didn't have direct contacts with students. the risks are low that there's been any further spread. >> reporter: despite assurances of risks being low, officials have shut down the school till

monday, hiring an outside firm to deep-clean the camp sxus has canceled all after-school activities. tuition for this school year is $49,000. today a security guard was seen turning people away. >> actually really sad to see it. normally it's very lively and people and parents are coming here. >> reporter: many say it's unusual to see the campus and surrounding streets empty of students and staff. >> i didn't know it would get so close to us in menloe park. >> reporter: she's concerned she may fall behind in classes but believes the school made the right decision. >> i do think that just because it is so severe and very contagious, it is really important to be cautious about it. all right.

oakland's school board has approved $20 million in budget cuts. that will mean layoffs by next fall. that notices have to go out this month. as many as 100 jobs are on the line. >> reporter: parents, staff, and activists streamed into the oakland school board meeting. >> joe justice, no peace! >> reporter: demanding that school police be disbanded to save the district more than $2 million annually. >> it's clear to me that these guys are all for the school decision pipeline. our kids are still being

treated as criminals. >> reporter: a year ago, oakland schools teacher strike gave teachers raises and cut and consolidated in other areas. now new cuts are proposed and the district says it has looked under every rock. the superintendent calls the budget reduction agonizing. painful but necessary. >> even though we did do our best to try to keep cuts as far away from students as possible. >> reporter: trustees overseeing school finances say they see oakland making a big step forward by streamlining. but those facing possible layoffs see it differently. >> our lives matter. be fair. let's talk about equity of the process. >> reporter: library managers. >> who would hire librarians? run professional development? be able to manage the library quat log and work with vendors?

its impacts. it serves many low-income and elderly patients. negotiations between seton's owner, verity health, and its potential buyer kppc health has failed in bankruptcy court. >> it's a huge mistake. especially with the coronavirus. we're in the middle of so many things that are wrong about this. in the community that is one of the wealthiest communities in this country that we cannot provide healthcare to our patients. >> the owners of seton medical center want to keep the hospital open but say they're struggling to find buyers for the site. steph curry will be back on the court tonight for the first time in more than four months. he broke his left hand in the fourth game of the season, and he's been out healing and rehabbing ever since then.
